Spring

Here in Minnesota, spring has been teasing us--playing a little game of catch and release. We've had a couple of balmy, sunny days that have awakened our senses to the freshness of spring air and promised us the hope of an end to winter. But then we've fallen into bed after hours full of mud puddle parades and happy laughter, only to wake again to a white blanket covering our mud pies and lawn chairs. It's a dance the seasons do every year, but for some reason that doesn't make it easier to wait out.

Yesterday was one of the sunny days. I got my kids up from their naps and we marched our selves out the door. I set up a chair, grabbed a book and relaxed while my kids joyfully played around me. It's funny, something about the end of winter puts life right back in your veins. Don't get me wrong, there is magic in the winter season. I love the first snowfall, or even a nice big blizzard: you know the kind where you huddle up in doors under a warm wool blanket with a cup of cocoa and your loved ones. But something about the winter grows long up here. Something about having to hide out within four walls that makes you feel trapped and overwhelmed.

That's why yesterday when the sun was shining, I felt so renewed. That's what the word spring means, by the way. Renewal. As I sat in that chair and looked up at the sky I was awestruck by the beauty I saw. There was a moment where the sun disappeared behind the most billowy clouds. And as the sun was hidden from view, I saw those gilded clouds speeding past. They were teasing me with the strands of the great light they were hiding. Then when at last the sun re-emerged, it burst forward almost animately. I felt it's warmth rush over me. If I was a photographer, I definitely would have captured that moment with my lens. In fact, I wish I was, because it was a beautiful sight. But, since I am a writer I do my best to capture it with my words.

There was something in that moment that reminded me of the process we go through every year with this inevitable transition from winter to spring. It's impactful, as evidenced by the hundreds of statuses on Facebook, the tweets and the blog posts about the seasons change. There are winters in our lives. I realize that's not an original idea-- I know that it's been said and I'm not attempting to present it as a unique impression. But our lives have winters, don't they? Seasons where we feel cold. We feel hidden. We feel trapped. We feel buried under the proverbial snow of circumstance. In those seasons, the clouds around us almost entirely hide the sun. We look up and all we see is darkness and we feel is cold and the absence of clarity, warmth and light. But if we looked closer, perhaps we could see the rushing of those clouds. Perhaps we would notice the gilded outlines that promise there is hope just past their edges. And though winter can be long, and the cold can cut deeply, that moment when the sun reappears... it's a moment that bowls you right over. It releases you in a blinding instant and as it's warmth covers you and its hope engulfs you, there is no doubt that cloud is gone.

Spring is teasing us. And maybe it'll arrive for good very soon, or maybe it won't. But the moments when the sun breaks out from the clouds have to be enough to give us hope. To keep us going. And to remind us, that behind every cloud, the sun is shining; that for every winter, there is a spring.

Indelible Change - Soundtracks of My Life

God really speaks to my heart through music.

I'm not sure if it's because I love music, or if it's a way He speaks to pretty much everyone, but a song has the power to move me so deeply and indelibly.

Tonight I was listening to this beautiful song by Brooke Fraser:

While we lived in Cape Town, South Africa I had only a few albums on my ipod. Two of those albums were by Brooke Fraser. I listened to her two albums on repeat while I rocked Peyton to sleep every night. Her music spoke deeply to my soul. And because of listening to it so much there, her music has become the soundtrack with which I identify my time in South Africa. I can't help but feel like I'm right back there looking over Marina da Gama when her music plays. I can close my eyes and see everything exactly as it was. I can see the curtains dancing softly in the breeze from the open windows. I can hear the water gently lapping the sides of our watery backyard. I can hear the birds, the breeze in the trees. I can hear the beautiful silence and see the brilliant stars. I can remember the feeling of peace I had there even when I didn't know what the future held for our family. I can remember knowing that God was working His will in our hearts and lives even when everything seemed so confusing.

There are "soundtracks" for so many different seasons of my life. This is a beautiful one though that I won't quickly forget.

What is a soundtrack in your life that you keep going back to? Maybe because the memories there are sweet or close to your heart?

This Path Called Life

Funny how life can take you places you never thought you'd go. How you can look at your life and marvel at where you are, and how you got here.

This third little life is due just about a month after my 23rd birthday. I'll have a child for each year of my 20s. I only met my husband 5 years ago... we married nearly 4 years ago... and here we are now with (nearly) 3 children. Cliche as it may sound by now, I couldn't have chosen a more appropriate name for this blog! My life has been on fast forward for a while now, and it doesn't appear to be slowing down.

But even in the midst of my wonder at this life of mine, I'm happy. This isn't the path I thought I'd take, but it's a beautiful path that's led me from being a young girl, afraid of life, to a wife and mother who is responsible for caring for an entire household.

Life has taken me places I didn't ask it to. But God has orchestrated each step, each open door, and each moment. I only pray that He will continue to lead me forward in HIS path and not in the paths that only I want. Because if I'd mapped out my life myself, I wouldn't be here. And that would be a mistake.

We have to trust that God knows what He's doing. Sometimes He'll start to take us somewhere and we'll halt--tell Him He can't be right--explain to Him that we won't be happy going that direction. BUT if we open our hands and TRUST... only beauty can be the result.

Waiting.

God has been speaking to me lately. In consistent, constant conversation.

This past week, His word for me has been WAIT.

My morning devotional one day was about waiting. A few of my favorite bloggers posted about waiting. I got in the car, turned on the radio and the preacher on the radio was talking about waiting. Then a friend of mine randomly told me a testimony from her life about waiting...  Do you think God was trying to tell me something?! I can't totally share yet just what God was telling me to wait about... but lets just say I knew what He was talking about. And I'm so glad He goes out of His way to get His point across.

"Waiting strengthens our patience and lengthens our perspective."
-Chuck Swindoll

Waiting is possibly one of the hardest principles in the Bible for me to follow. And I think I know why... It means relinquishing control. It means accepting that you won't be able to totally see the road in front of you,  but moving forward anyway. That's scary for a dreamer like me. I like to rush ahead and see everything I can as quickly as possible. In my mind, there will be time to stop and smell those roses later, but first, I want to know what's around that next bend.

God is teaching me to sit. To stop. To pause. To rest. To WAIT. And I am learning to trust His silence. To understand His peace. To be refreshed in His stationery presence.

A Mish Mash of Life Lately

Life has been beyond crazy! My 2 girls are the loves of my life, but they're also a handful! I'm busy.... but a happy and fulfilled busy.

These pictures of my 2 beauties are from July. Photos were taken by my sister in law, Rachel. Aren't my girls just precious?!?!

Life in our new home is still crazy. I never could have guessed just how crazy it would be to get settled in a house that we are also fully renovating. And to do it with 2 little ones underfoot, it has simply been near to impossible to truly get everything done we have wanted to so far. I have a feeling our home will be a work in progress for a few years to come ;)

One thing that has been helping me not get too overwhelmed is the fact that I have my speakers set up in my kitchen now which makes it all the more important to press the reset button and stay in perspective! And having more time with my husband has been so refreshing and precious.

Fall seems to be just around the corner with crisper air, cooler nights and even some changing leaves. I love our famous falls in Vermont so I am looking forward to some bright color gracing the Green Mountains :)

And of course, fall fashion is always fun! I love warm sweaters, scarves, flats, boots, cardigans and cute hats!

Is it weird that I actually miss the back to school feeling from fall? I honestly do! I miss the sharpened pencils and the notebooks and new textbooks crisp and ready to be cracked! I was home schooled my whole life and I always looked forward to school. A lot of my schooling was pretty independent as I got older, and honestly I loved the challenge of pacing myself and working through my tasks as they came. I plan on homeschooling my kiddos when that time comes, so maybe I need to channel the whole missing back to school feeling so that I have motivation in 3-4 years when it's time to start school with the girls :) :)

Well, there's a quick update from my little corner! Lots of love to everyone!
